Since 2002, Botox Cosmetic has become a popular, non-invasive cosmetic procedure to diminish and/or eliminate wrinkles that are caused by repetitive muscle movement. Botox works by temporarily blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This weakens and reduces muscle activity that causes the persistent lines to form and as a result, the wrinkles that occur with expression is diminished.  The FDA has approved Botox Cosmetic to minimize the vertical lines between the eyebrows. Although not FDA approved, Botox Cosmetic has been successfully used for many years for treating other areas/wrinkles of the face such as the horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes), dimpled chin, “bunny nose”, gummy smile, and neck bands.  Many individuals are concerned that Botox will result in a “frozen” look, but a natural look can be achieved when injecting the correct amount by a qualified medical professional.  Results become noticeable in 1 to 4 days, but the full effect may not be seen for 2 to 4 weeks. The effects last up to 4 months.  However, the duration of response is dependent upon the injection site and dose.  Some individuals, particularly those who have repeated injections in the same area, may experience benefits for six months or longer.  Men typically require higher doses of Botox than women.  The amount of Botox needed to minimize or eliminate wrinkles can vary significantly among individuals, but here is a general guideline for Botox dosing by area:

–   Forehead (horizontal lines) 12-30 units

–   Frown lines (vertical lines between the eyebrows) 20 units

–  “Crow’s feet” 12 units/side

–  “Bunny nose” 6-12 units

–   Gummy smile 6 units

–   Dimpled Chin  4-10 units

–   Neck bands 12-20 units

–   Hyperhydrosis (excessive under arm sweating) 50 units/underarm

–   Slimming of Jaw Line or TMJ Treatment 20 units/masseter muscle
